Hatchets Win First “Road” Sectional In 84 Years As Miiller Claims Win #550!

March 7, 2009.  The last time Washington won a sectional championship away from home, the team wasn’t even known as the Hatchets.  The year was 1925 and WHS defeated the Bedford Stonecutters on their home court, 34-25.  That team went on to the final four of the state finals and finished 25-3.  After hosting the sectional from 1926 through 2008, Washington was forced to hit the road once again for sectional play, this time at Huntingburg.  Although it was a different venue, the result was the same.  The Class 3A No. 2 Washington (21-2) won its 5th straight sectional crown with a 42-34 win over ancient rival Vincennes Lincoln.

In a game dominated by three-pointers, free throws and jump balls, WHS shut out the Alices 9-0 after 1 quarter of play.  Powered by Cody Osmon’s 4 three-pointers in the first half, the Hatchets led 17-12 at the half.  WHS led by 10 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, but Vincennes came storming back in the 4th  and cut the lead to 3, 30-27.  Although Sam Gines hit 8-10 free throws in the final stanza to help maintain Washington’s lead, it was Kurtis Anthony’s 2 free throws with 1:17 left on the clock that stopped the Alice momentum and moved the Hatchet lead back up to 5, 32-27.  Although an unusual amount of jump balls were called after Washington rebounds in the last period, the Hatchet lead was never threatened after Anthony’s two free tosses.

The Hatchets held Vincennes to just 28% shooting from the field.  Sam Gines led WHS with 17 points while Cody Osmon finished with 14.

Gene Miiller is the first Hatchet coach since Marion Crawley (1940-1941-1942) to have 3 consecutive 20-win seasons.  Coach Miiller has now won 550 games over his hall-of-fame career.  Cody Osmon passed the 400-point mark for career scoring at WHS.  The Alices lead the all-time series, 104-87, but the Hatchets have won the last 7 meetings.

Hatchets Win Battle Over Evansville Memorial

February 27, 2009.  Class 3A No. 2 Washington (18-2) shut down Evansville Memorial’s high scoring offense  en route to a 58-49 win at the Hatchet House.  Cody Zeller led the Hatchets with 16 points and 9 rebounds.  Cody Osmon added 9 while Wade Collins continued his recent strong play with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

The victory marked Washington’s 7th consecutive 18-win season.  During this 7-year stretch of unprecedented success, WHS has won two state titles and has the 2nd best won-loss in the entire state.

The Hatchets  lead the all-time series, 3-1.

The Hatchets won the JV game, 44-39.  Dylan Ervin paced the team with 16 points, while Adam Lane added 10.  Robert Pittman scored 6 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

Brashear Hits 300-Point Mark As Lady Hatchets Beat Princeton

January 10, 2009.  Olivia Brashear scored 17 points to lead the Washington Lady Hatchets (7-5) over Princeton, 51-40.  Olivia now has 300 career points at WHS, number 43 on the all-time scoring list.  Kylee Anthony, who scored 680 points during her career at Red Hill before transferring for her senior year at Washington, added 12 points.

Jessica Prewett Breaks 500-Point Mark In Lady Hatchets Loss

December 18, 2008.  The Washington Lady Hatchets dropped to 4-5 on the season with a 54-47 loss at Loogootee.  Senior Jessica Prewett, who averages 17.7 points per game, led the Lady Hatchets with 20 points.  Enroute to her 20 points, she became just the 26th Lady Hatchet to score 500 or more career points.  Jessica now has 517 points at WHS, which ranks 24th on the all-time list.

Washington Has Best Record in Indiana Since the Zeller Era Began!

December 7, 2008.  The “Zeller Era” officially started on November 21, 2001 when 6-10 freshman Luke Zeller scored 19 points as Washington defeated Barr-Reeve, 57-45.  In the 7-plus seasons since its inception, the “Era” has produced 2 state championships (2005 and 2008) and 2 Mr. Basketballs.  Luke was named Mr. Basketball in 2005 and brother Tyler picked up the same award in 2008.  With the third and final part of the “Era” being played out by little brother Cody Zeller, a 6-8 sophomore, it will officially end sometime in March of 2011.  The three brothers have combined to score over 3,400 points at WHS so far, with Luke and Tyler ranked first and second respectively on the all-time list.

The “Zeller Era” has produced another record that has statewide recognition.  Since the 2001-02 season, the Washington Hatchets have the best won-loss record in the entire state.  Not just in its class (3A) but among all high schools in the Sate of Indiana.  WHS has a record of 141 wins and only 30 losses during the “Era” for a winning percentage of .825.  Orleans, another Southern Indiana school is a close second at .823.  Indianapolis Pike is third at .821.

When the “Zeller Era” sadly ends in 2011, it will culminate a golden period in Hatchet basketball that has not been matched since 1942 and the end of the DeJernett Dynasty”.  Thanks to the hard work of Coach Omer and Coach Miiller during the past 7-plus seasons along with the dedication of ALL the players, the Old Gold and Black is recognized statewide again

Steve Bouchie Elected to Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame

November 27, 2008.  Steve Bouchie will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.  He is the 12th former player or coach out of Washington High School to be enshrined into the Hall.

Steve Bouchie, 1979 Hatchet

Fondly known as Tree by his teammates, the 1979 Mr. Basketball is Washington’s all-time rebound leader with 842.  He grabbed 20 or more rebounds in a game 7 times.  During his senior season of 1978-79, he averaged 27.0 ppg and 15.0 rpg.  When Steve graduated from WHS in 1979, he was the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,311 points.  He still ranks 4th on Washington’s scoring list.  He is the only Hatchet ever to average a double-double for his career with an 18.0 point average and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Steve went on to play basketball at Indiana University and was a member of the 1981 National Championship team under Bobby Knight.  In 2004, he headlined the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Silver Anniversary Team.

Hatchets.net Provides IHSAA with New Scoring Record for Roy Burris

December12, 2007.  Former Washington Hatchet Roy Burris has been recognized as the new record holder of the state tournament single game scoring mark with 58 points.  While researching Hatchet history, Hatchets.net discovered that Roy hit 29 field goals in the 1921 Sullivan Sectional against Paxton and petitioned the IHSAA for a correction to state records.  Steve Alford of New Castle was thought to have held the scoring record with 57 points against Indianapolis Broad Ripple in a 1983 Semi-State game.

Roy was the school’s all-time leading scorer for 44 years.  Today, he is the sixth leading scorer all-time at WHS with at least 1,124 points (individual scoring for some games is missing).  A Second Team All-State selection in 1920, his 58-point game in 1921 is Washington’s single game scoring record.  Roy led WHS in scoring for three seasons during which the Old Gold and Black went 57-16.  He was the second player in Indiana high school to break the 1,000 career scoring mark.  Roy finished third in the 440 yard run at the 1920 Indiana High School Track and Field State Finals.  Later, he became a three-sport star at Indiana State (Terre Haute Normal) where he picked up the nickname “Goose.”  He started playing minor league baseball in 1925 and hit .292 over four seasons.  The speedy centerfielder also averaged 15 stolen bases and 9 triples per season.

After his minor league baseball stint, he played semi-professional basketball in the Akron, Ohio area for the Firestone Non-Skids from 1928-1933.  He was the starting guard on Firestone’s 1933 National Industrial Championship team.  The Non-Skids finished 36-4 that season, including two wins over the national professional champion Cleveland Rosenblums.  Roy was inducted into the Summitt County Ohio Sports Hall of Fame in 1965.  He was inducted into the Indiana State University’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
